Dental anxiety: fear of the dentist, sedation dentistry, relaxation techniques

Contact Midtown Dental today to learn more about our dental services.

For many people, going to the dentist can be a source of great anxiety. Dental anxiety is a common fear that affects millions of people worldwide, and it can have serious consequences for your oral health. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome dental anxiety, including sedation dentistry and relaxation techniques. However, it’s important to seek out professional help rather than trying to manage dental anxiety on your own. Learn more

Dental anxiety can be caused by a number of factors, including fear of pain, fear of needles, fear of the unknown, and a general feeling of helplessness. This anxiety can prevent people from seeking the dental care they need, which can lead to serious oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

One solution to dental anxiety is sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry involves the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. There are several types of sedation available, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation (pills), and IV sedation (injection). Explore more

Nitrous oxide is the most common form of sedation used in dental offices. It’s a gas that is administered through a mask that fits over your nose. Nitrous oxide is fast-acting, and it wears off quickly once the mask is removed. Oral sedation involves taking a pill before your appointment to help you relax. This type of sedation takes longer to take effect than nitrous oxide, and the effects can last longer as well. IV sedation is the strongest form of sedation and is typically reserved for more invasive procedures.

While sedation dentistry can be a helpful tool for managing dental anxiety, it’s important to remember that it should only be used under the guidance of a trained dental professional. The dosage of medication used will be carefully monitored, and your vital signs will be monitored throughout the procedure to ensure your safety.

Another way to manage dental anxiety is through relaxation techniques. These techniques can be practiced before and during your dental appointment to help you feel more calm and comfortable. Some popular relaxation techniques include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization.

Deep breathing involves taking slow, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This technique can help to slow your heart rate and calm your nerves. Progressive muscle relaxation involves tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups throughout your body, which can help to release tension and promote relaxation. Visualization involves imagining a peaceful and calming scene, such as a beach or a forest, to help distract your mind from your dental procedure.

While relaxation techniques can be helpful in managing dental anxiety, it’s important to remember that they should not be used as a substitute for professional dental care. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral health, and avoiding the dentist due to anxiety can lead to serious dental problems.

In conclusion, dental anxiety is a common fear that can prevent people from seeking the dental care they need. Fortunately, there are solutions available, including sedation dentistry and relaxation techniques. However, it’s important to seek out professional help rather than trying to manage dental anxiety on your own. A trained dental professional can provide guidance on the best way to manage your anxiety and ensure your safety during dental procedures. So, if you’re struggling with dental anxiety, don’t hesitate to speak with your dentist and explore your options for managing your anxiety and maintaining good oral health.

This dentist is so good that I choose to go here despite being out of my insurance network. I had previously gone to another dentist in Cherry creek who kept performing expensive treatments that didn’t help. After my first visit at midtown dental, they resolved my issue. Their staff is incredibly kind, patient, and transparent.

We've been going to Midtown Dental for close to 10 years. Dr. T and his team are our favorites! Having two young girls who were not particularly excited about going to the dentist, they were made to feel incredibly comfortable and now actually look forward to going to the dentist!!! Thanks Midtown Dental!

I have been going to Midtown Dental for about 8 years. I always love the dental hygienists. My mom was a hygienist so I have been spoiled my whole life with a great hygienist (totally bias). I love the hygienists at Midtown. I had a great cleaning today. They use the ultrasonic water to get the plaque off which is super comfortable. They are thorough. This is a down-to-earth place which is super friendly and professional staff. Covid Protocols are in place, which made me feel comfortable. Insurance was billed and my whole experience was smooth.
